The Coaching Habit: Say Less, Ask More & Change the Way Your Lead Forever
Your advice is not as good as you think. Effective coaching means asking “seven essential questions” so employees can find their own solutions.
The goal of the book is for you to give less advice and show more curiosity
The book has two major frameworks that will help you change the way you coach or manage your team members:
- New Habit Formula (this formula uses the principle that I've detail on my other story, 5 Essential Components to Build an Effective New Habit)
- Seven Essential Questions
New Habit Formula (1/3 of the book is about this)
This formula will help you identify the trigger, identify the old habit and define the new behavior.
How it works?
Identify the trigger
The reason, that leads to the behavior that want to change.
There are five types of triggers: location, time, emotional state, other people and the immediately preceding action.
Example: when i’m feeling frustrated (emotional state), in my monthly meeting (time) with Homer (people) because he says … (action)
Instead of … (Identify the old habit)
Here try do be the more specific possible about the old habit, so you know what you’re trying to stop doing.
Example: I ask Homer if he have already thought about X, and i hope that he’ll get the suggestion has a pseudo-question.
I Will (With the trigger and the old habit detailed it’s time to define the new behavior)
It must be a behavior that will take 60 seconds or less to do. Keep in mind that the objective of the book is to give less advice and show more curiosity.
Example: I will ask Homer, What ideas do you have?
Will this be simple? NO!
Seven Essential Questions (2/3 of the book is about this)
These are the 7 questions that you should/must use to create a coaching habit, they are:
1. WHAT’S ON YOUR MIND?
The Kickstart Question
2. AND WHAT ELSE?
The AWE Question
3. WHAT’S THE REAL CHALLENGE HERE FOR YOU?
The Focus Question
4. WHAT DO YOU WANT?
The Foundation Question
5. HOW CAN I HELP?
The Lazy Question
6. IF YOU’RE SAYING YES TO THIS, WHAT ARE YOU SAYING NO TO?
The Strategic Question
7. WHAT WAS MOST USEFUL FOR YOU?
The Learning Question
The book gives you the tools, motivation will get you started but it’s the power of Habit that will keep you going.
Give it a try a you will feel much better about yourself and about your team.
